I was lucky enough to be born into a pretty musical family. My dad and brother played the sax, and my sister played the flute. At school I played a bunch of different instruments, and started playing the trumpet at about age 11. I got pretty good at that and ended up playing in a big concert band for about 5 years. At some point I decided that trumpet wasn't for me and stupidly gave it up. Only now do I find out that so many of the bass greats are also trumpet players!! Dammit!
I started playing bass at 17. No instrument before or since has ever felt so right to me, it was love at first touch. I am a bass man through and through, I can't even play a single chord on guitar! If you're a bass player (and even if you're not), you have to watch this video of Michael Manring playing The Enormous Room. It opened my eyes to what could be done on the bass. I probably watch it at least once a month, it's just so beautiful.
I love Third Eye Blind, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Counting Crows. If I was trapped on a desert island with any of their albums I would never get bored. I love working on crazy projects and making cool shit, but I almost always never use whatever it is after I've made it. I love travelling - I spend too much time working with technology and love to get as far away from it as possible.
You only get one life so you'd better make the most of it. Don't let anyone ever tell you what you can and can't do.
